Syrian Refugees Granted Canadian Citizenship in Ceremony

Canadian Citizenship in Ceremony

Over five years ago, Syrian refugees came to Canada to flee the civil war happening in their homeland

The newcomers were welcomed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and invited to join the Canadian “family.” The anniversary of the special day was celebrated by 29 refugees from eleven different families being sworn in as Canadian citizens. One of the refugees, Rahaf Zwayne was so desperate to leave the fear and violence in Syria that she considered crossing on a migrant boat to Europe. Instead, she was sponsored by a Canadian couple, came into Canada with the support of the government, earned a diploma in hospitality and tourism, and settled into her new life in Canada.

Zwayne experienced many challenges along the way, but the support and kindness of her sponsors and other helpful Canadians are far more important to her. The Syrian refugee resettle initiative was, according to Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino, an ambitious effort by governments, sponsors, community volunteers, businesses, and the Canadians who welcomed the refugees with generosity and kindness.

Mendicino said in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, citizens opened their hearts and homes and helped more than 70,000 newcomers start a new life in Canada. Canada is a home of diversity and openness. Contact BecomeACanadian to begin the process of immigration and a new life in such a welcoming country.
